started at sea, ended at sea -Martin Eden

Martin Eden starts his life as a poor sailor and falls in love with Ruth Morse, a beautiful and intelligent young woman. Ruth comes from an upper-class family and their love is met with resistance due to Martin's social status.

Martin educates himself and starts writing literature to impress Ruth, but publishers reject his work and Martin loses his confidence. Meanwhile, Ruth's brother, a wealthy and beautiful woman, likes a story Martin wrote and hires him as his consultant. This job raises Martin's social status and Ruth starts to show interest in him again. However, Martin's success alienates him from others and he feels different from everyone else.

Martin loses his relationship with Ruth and her family and falls into a deep depression. He numbs his pain with alcohol and falls into a bad state. In the end, Martin takes his own life.

"Martin Eden" depicts how success can destroy a writer and lead to a sense of loneliness. Martin's tragic life explores themes such as poverty, class differences, failure, suicide, and people losing control of their own lives.
